Hello my fellow homo sapiens! Long time, no see. If I'm being honest, I knew that this would happen. I mean the huge period of time that got in between this very post I'm currently writing and the one I uploaded, apparently, 34 weeks ago... But now that I'm here again and it's the long anticipated summer break, I hope to post frequently so be tuned for when I post a new one!
Enough of me rambling, let's get to the actual post. Today, I went to see the third instalment of the Cars. I knew it would be great as you can't really go wrong with a Disney/Pixar movie. Espacially with such a classic like Cars. However, I totally was caught off guard when a sudden nostalgia hit me so hard in the depths of my sensitive little heart that I had to write down a review to get the feels out.
Here goes a confession... I cried three times during the movie. WHAT. Not only was I the only teenager at the theatre (it was filled with boisterous little children and their parents), I most probably was the only person to cry during a cartoon. (Well except for some iconic scenes such as the death of Bambi's mom or Mufasa that made every child cry.) Seeing McQueen, Mater and many more characters that I adored as a little kid made me so emotional. Plus, you'd be either heartless or a liar if you claim you didn't get even slightly emotional whenever they talked about Hudson Hornet. Personally, I was surprised with the amount of tears I shed when someone mentioned him. You wouldn't think the fictional death of a fictional car has an impact on things. Apparently, it does.
Such a legendary character, this one.
Before moving onto the complicated, chaotic review part, a brief summary of the plot; it follows our beloved main character Lightning McQueen per usual. Time doesn't wait for anyone and the years fly away, McQueen is now considered an old man, even a rattletrap. Some new generation, high-tech rookies come and one of them, Jackson Storm, wins the race, coming out of nowhere and leaving McQueen behind. McQueen now has to win the race in Florida or his racing career will diminish. People, paparazzi, pooh! as Guido would say, have already started to talk about his retirement. We follow McQueen as he tries to find a way to beat Storm and of course, a lot happens during the journey.
It's not possible for me to review this movie without accidentally giving away something, so be warned. For those of you who haven't seen it, there will be spoilers ahead! You can stop here and read the outro right away, or proceed with caution.
First of all, how amazing were the new characters?! I absolutely loved Cruz. She's such a precious cinnamon roll, so passionate and fierce. I also very much appreciated how we were introduced to a female race car like the Piston Cup legend, Louise Nash. We learned that it was, still is, unusual and hard to be recognized and respected as a female racer.
But let's go back to Cruz Ramirez. She swept the ground off of Storm's feet... or tires. When she was first introduced, I didn't think I would love her as much. But throughout the story, I've grown to like her more and more. I espacially adored her relationship with McQueen as he became her mentor by the end. He taught her what he had learned from Doc and oh lord, the Doc&McQueen / McQueen&Cruz parallels are the reason I'm emotionally unstable. As much as I would love to insert a couple of great scenes, I can't seem to find the footage as the movie has just come out. Oh well.
Instead, have this. The beach scene was hilarious.
Learning her backstory and that she was inspired by McQueen, watching his races as a child, added so much to the storyline. I loved how they started arguing in the middle of the road. The way she achieved what she's always dreamt of and how she grew up throughout the movie was amazing to witness. She started off as a simple trainer with faded dreams and a low self-esteem and by the end she was a confident race car. Brilliant.
I also enjoyed the dynamics between the other racers and McQueen. I don't know why exactly, but I really liked the fact that Lightning made lots of new friends that he regularly talks to and jokes around with.
On the other hand, it was so nice to see the old crew; Sally, Mater, Luigi, Guido, Ramone and Flo. I loved the dynamic between Sally and McQueen. Sally was always there to support him. They weren't a big part of the storyline and it felt so natural. After all, I shipped them back in the day when I didn't even know what a ship was.
Mater, since the first movie, always brings joy to my heart. He's such a solid, supportive sidekick.
Luigi & Guido, the power duo. I think there's no need to explain why they are amazing. Guido -changing those tires faster than The Flash since 2006 😂.Chick Hicks and his idiotic narcissism... Never gets old.
ALSO MIND THE CAPSLOCK BUT WE SAW THE KING TOO. Old ones give me nostalgia, in case you couldn't tell by now.
Onto some highlights!
I was trying my best not to make dying pterodactyl sounds when Cruz used Hudson's move.
I was so sure McQueen would use it just like he did the turn in the first movie. But to my surprise, it was Cruz. I guessed that he'd become Cruz's mentor but I didn't think he would give his place to her to continue the race. I was literally beaming with pride and when Ramone used his mad skills to write 95 on Cruz; that little stupid, highbrow rookie flashed -kachow!- before my eyes. Seriously though, McQueen has grown so much as a character and as if everything else wasn't making me a cry baby already, he showed up with a dark blue coat of paint that says Fabulous Lightning McQueen.
Too. Many. Feels.
Plus do I really need to mention how awesome is the fact that Cruz got 51 as her number? I think not.
Also, another scene that brought tears to my eyes was the one where Smokey and McQueen had a conversation about Hudson. Smokey saying that Doc started writing letters, all about McQueen, and that he was having the best time in his life after McQueen had said he was never the same after the accident. Then, we get to see his joy as he guides Cruz to victory and becomes her mentor. Like I've said, so many great parallels...
Honorable mentions:
- Sterling. I didn't like him when I first saw him. Then I was hopeful after seeing his McQueen collection and the jars filled with earth from the race locations. But let's go back to first impression. Definitely dislike at first sight. Or something.
- Thunder Hollow Race... Hilarious. That's all I have to say for it.
- Dusty & Rusty, also from the old crew. My heart broke a little when they sold the Rust-eze to get McQueen a new sponsor that could help him with becoming better.
- Little fanboy that was screaming Lightning like crazy. Reminded me of the fangirl twins. Where were they by the way?
Finally, I'd like to start the outro by apologizing for the extreme amount of fangirling in this post. I couldn't stop myself from getting everything out in a way that wasn't quite literal and fancy.
Cars was one of my favourite movies in my childhood. I don't even know how many times I've seen it. Seeing all of those children at the theatre and realizing that there may be amongst them some who hasn't even seen the previous ones made me feel ancient. Yeah, sweet sixteen or whatever but hear me out. When I was a munchkin, McQueen was a rookie. He was the new generation at the time and I've watched him grow personality-wise. Now, after all these years, he is the old one that gets replaced by the new new generation and it naturally made me realize how the years've gone so fast...
*cough* Well, that went deep... Anyways, I hope you guys enjoyed me rambling over and repeating the same words, as I was trying to put a presentable review out there. If you have read until the very end, feel free to let me know in the comments what you thought about the movie and what was your favourite scene? Mine was probably the end scene. Not specifying because I promised a spoiler free outro!
Until next time, kachow!
